What is UnfairNet (UNet)?
UnfairNet is a network to allow communications with other members via chat rooms or private messages. It supports a broad set of features, and better security than many of the popular instant messaging programs, such as AOL Instant Messenger.
How can I have multiple names when I only sign in once?
UnfairNet is Account based - usernames are unique, but are merely used to determine the account to which a message should be routed. Because of the way this is setup you may have messages from multiple usernames delivered seamlessly to a single client.
What are the major attributes of UnfairNet?
• Security
• User friendly
• Open source
• Developer friendly
• Responsive staff
How can you afford to keep this service running?
UnfairNet's main servers are paid for by donations from members that appreciate this service, and small fees from premium services. If you wish to contribute you may go HERE to send a Paypal payment. If you wish to contribute a large amount of money and do not have a Paypal account please feel free to send an email to donations@unfairnet.com and we will provide you with a mailing address or alternate means of payment.
Can you guarantee no one will get my password?
Your password is not saved anywhere on our servers - a hash of your password is saved instead. This means your password cannot be stolen, since hashes are one way - they cannot be decrypted. How do we see if your logon password is correct? We hash the password you input when you login, and compare it to the hash in our database - if they match then we know your password is correct. Thus we protect your password while still protecting the security of your account.
Does UnfairNet have rate limits?
Yes, but they will not affect you if you just chat normally - they merely prevent users from intentionally flooding our servers, or spamming a large amount of people quickly.
What is the maximum length of a profile?
Profiles are limited by file size rather than text length. 20k is the maximum file size for a profile.
How can I contact a global administrator?
You may PM the username "admin" (please mention why you are contacting us in your first PM or you may not receive a response as we do not use this name for chatting purposes - support only).
If you have general questions about UnfairNet you may want to go into the chat "UNet" and see if someone there is able to answer your questions.
You may also email support@unfairnet.com if you have support related issues, or tos@unfairnet.com if need to report a TOS (Terms of Service) violation.
Chat/Server
There is a user in a chat that has a !,$, or * in their username - what does this mean?
• ! (exclamation mark) denotes a Global admin
• $ (dollar sign) denotes a Server admin
• * (asterisk) denotes a Chat moderator
A Chat Moderator has the ability to kick users out of one specific chat, and a few other limited chat-related features. A Server Administrator may have the same privileges as chat moderators in certain chats, but also has the ability to terminate the connection of any user that is logged in through their server. A Global Administrator has control in any chat, as well as being able to terminate any user's connection if they violate the UnfairNet TOS (Terms of Service), and even ban users from the network permanently.
How can I become a Server Administrator?
By applying HERE to be able to run a UnfairNet Satellite Server if you have a high-speed (Cable, DSL, or faster) connection.
How can I kick people out of a chat?
You can pay a small yearly fee to permanently retain ownership of a chat. The first person to enter a chat receives these privileges automatically, if the chat does not have a permanent owner, but they also lose them once everyone leaves the chat.
Someone is advertising over and over in a chat, can I stop this?
If no one is requesting this advertising then we ask that you REPORT the person - this is considered spam and will be dealt with by our administrative team.
Someone is being annoying in a chat, but they aren't really doing anything wrong, what can I do about this?
We suggest you use the ignore button if the individual is not doing anything against the UnfairNet rules. This will prevent you from receiving any more chat messages from this person.
What are CPM (Chat PM)?
Chat Private Messages are similar to regular PMs, except that they may use a different set of privacy settings, depending on how you have it set. Chat Private Messages may only be received from people currently in a chat room with you.
How many chats can I be in at once?
Ten for each account (not per username).
The chat room said I was "gagged", what does this mean?
Gagging is an ability Server Administrators and some Chat Moderators have which allows them to prevent a user from sending messages to the chat. Gagging usually lasts a certain amount of time.
What are the Announcements/Rules that appeared when I entered a chat?
These are set by the current owner of the chat, and are not in any way influenced by UnfairNet or its staff.
I was kicked out of a chat for being idle, what is this?
A chat owner has a number of moderation options, one of them is to force users to leave if they become idle or do not talk for a certain amount of time.
I tried to join a chat and it said I wasn't allowed, or it said the Chat Owner rejected my request, what does this mean?
If the chat owner rejects your request you cannot join the room, since the owner is asked each time a user wants to join (if this is the way he has set it up)
If it says you cannot join you may be banned, or the owner may be using an allow list (a small list of usernames that are allowed into the chat)
My Satellite Server forced me to switch to another one, why is this?
At certain times users hosting a Satellite Server may need to reboot their machines, or repair them, and for this reason the network moved you to a different Satellite Server while the one you were on goes offline briefly.
The Main Server is down, what is happening?
We may be upgrading, or it may be an unscheduled outage, but in either case it is sure to be brief. If you are already talking to a buddy it will not affect your conversation - all users already logged in will stay that way even if the main server goes offline for a few minutes.
PM/Username
Can I trade, change, or delete my username later?
Yes, UnfairNet supports all these operations. Trading names is an integrated part of the network, so it can be done seamlessly (WITHOUT any "scamming" problems i.e. someone offering you a name then not giving it to you once they have yours).
Someone is bothering me, how can I handle this?
You can adjust your privacy settings to block the person, or make yourself invisible to them. If it is a person you believe is randomly harassing people intentionally you may report them to the UnfairNet administrative team HERE
How many buddies can I have on my list at once?
The maximum is 400.
What happens when I send a message to a user while they are offline?
It will be delivered to them when they sign on next.
